How Alex Rivera Went From ICBAS Student to Barbershop Owner
From a Chair to His Own Shop
Alex Rivera didn't grow up thinking he'd own a business. He'd worked a series of warehouse and retail jobs after high school and was looking for something different — something that combined working with his hands, connecting with people, and building something of his own.
A friend suggested barbering. Alex enrolled at ICBAS in 2022.
Why He Chose ICBAS
Alex had been to a few beauty school open houses, but ICBAS stood out for two reasons: the hybrid format and the business training built into the curriculum.
"I knew I wanted to own a shop someday," Alex says. "Most programs just teach you how to cut. ICBAS taught me how to run a business — taxes, record-keeping, client management, all of it."
The hybrid model also worked for Alex, who was still working part-time while in school. He studied theory online during breaks and evenings, then came to campus for hands-on training.
Building Skills on the Floor
The 1,000-hour barbering program at ICBAS covers everything from precision cutting and fades to straight razor shaving and beard sculpting. Alex says the real turning point was working in the student salon with actual clients.
"That's where you learn what the real job is," he says. "It's not just about the cut — it's about the consultation, the experience, making someone feel good when they leave your chair."
Alex's instructor, Hayk Ter-Hovanesian, was a key influence. "He didn't just teach technique. He taught me how to think like a professional."
Opening the Shop
After graduating and passing the State Board exam, Alex worked at a barbershop in East LA for about 18 months — building a clientele, saving money, and learning the business from the inside.
In late 2024, he signed a lease on a small shop in his neighborhood. "I kept it simple at first. Two chairs, me and one other barber. I didn't need anything fancy — I needed clients, and I already had them."
Alex credits the ICBAS business curriculum for giving him the confidence to take the leap. "I understood what it takes to run a shop before I ever opened one. That's not something most barber schools teach you."
Where He Is Now
Alex's shop has grown to four chairs and a loyal client base. He specializes in fades, textured hair, and beard sculpting. He says the most rewarding part of ownership is building something in his own community.
"Great school! I have used them for services and have always walked away happy. The staff and students are fantastic, creating the perfect environment to learn the trade."
His Advice for Future Barbers
"Take the business classes seriously. Everyone wants to be great with clippers. Not everyone takes the time to learn how to manage money, deal with taxes, and build a brand. That's what separates barbers who last from ones who don't."
