Mia Caldwell: From Career Change to Medical Spa Esthetician
"The Clinical Training Gave Me the Exact Skills I Needed"
At 30, Mia Caldwell was working a desk job in marketing and felt stuck. She'd always been fascinated by skincare — reading ingredient labels, testing products, following estheticians on social media — but she'd never considered it as a career. A four-year degree was behind her, and going back to school felt daunting.
Then she learned that a California esthetician license requires just 600 hours of training — and that ICBAS offered it in a hybrid format she could complete in as little as 16 weeks.
Making the Switch
Mia enrolled in the ICBAS esthetician program in early 2024. She was nervous about being a "non-traditional" student, but she quickly realized she wasn't alone.
"There were people in my class from all different backgrounds and ages," Mia says. "Some were fresh out of high school, some were in their 40s changing careers. Nobody made me feel like I was starting too late."
The hybrid format was key for Mia's transition. She kept her marketing job for the first few months, studying theory online during evenings and weekends, and coming to campus for clinical training during the day.
The Training
Mia's program covered the full range of esthetician skills:
- Skin analysis and client consultation
- Manual and electrical facials
- Chemical peels and professional-grade treatments
- Waxing, threading, and hair removal
- Eyebrow and lash services
- Makeup application
- Health, safety, and sanitation protocols
She says the most transformative part was the clinical training with real clients. "That's where I stopped feeling like a student and started feeling like a professional. The clinical training at ICBAS gave me the exact skills I needed."
Her instructor, Arlene Grigorian, guided her through the more advanced techniques. "Arlene has so much experience, and she was patient and detailed. She didn't just show you how — she explained why."
Landing the Job
After passing the State Board exam, Mia began applying to medical spas in the Los Angeles area. Her clinical experience at ICBAS gave her a portfolio of work and the confidence to interview well.
She was hired within three weeks.
"An amazing experience! I'm so grateful for the friends I've made and the things I was taught."
Where She Is Now
Today, Mia works as a Medical Spa Esthetician in West LA, performing facials, chemical peels, and skincare consultations. She says the career change was the best decision she ever made.
"I wake up excited to go to work. I didn't have that before. And I did it all in less than six months — from enrollment to employment."
Her Advice for Career Changers
"Stop waiting for the perfect time. There isn't one. I spent two years thinking about esthetics before I actually enrolled. I wish I'd done it sooner. If you're interested, just start."
